Introducing your new favorite Alberta snack

Meatco Alberta

Meatco is a staple in Wainwright, Alberta. Locals heading out of town to visit relatives stop at this place first to stock up on requested delicious morsels of meat.

A few weekends ago we were in Wainwright visiting family. Just before we headed out the door, they suggested that we swing by Meatco on the way home. With a name like
Meatco how could we resist?20170513_154205

We pull into the dirt parking lot in front of a big white building with a bright red sign that can’t be missed. The first thing I noticed as I walked in was the glass case with the coveted pepperoni sticks straight ahead. Each only a dollar a stick and 6 kinds to choose from; honey garlic, hickory, beer, honey mustard, teriyaki, and original. The other walls were filled with standing glass-door freezers.

We were greeted with a friendly, ‘Hello, what can I get for you’. I immediately floated towards the pepperoni sticks. We had just finished eating a big meal, but suddenly I was hungry all over again.  The aroma of smoky meat danced in the air and my stomach was following its rhythm. Our intention was to buy a few pepperoni sticks for the road, but our shopping list grew bigger as we looked around. Our final arm full included 1 package of cheese sausages, two steaks, a package of 20 frozen beef patties, and countless pepperoni sticks of every kind. With meat looking that good and sold with a friendly smile, it was hard to stop adding items to our pile.

With big goofy smiles and our bag of loot, we headed back to the car. Inside we quickly tore into the pepperoni. I tried the honey garlic, it was lightly sweet with just a touch of smokiness. Jean-Claude had a hickory, it had a prominent smoky flavor. The perfect road trip snack.

If your travels take you past Wainwright be sure to stop in and get some snacks for the road. If you want to get some of their yummy cuts of meat, bring a cooler with you and stock up.

Meatco is located at 102 17 St, Wainwright, AB

Yummy quick eats – How to find dumplings in Korea

I quickly learned to follow gusts of steam like clues on a treasure map. Whether it took me down side alleys, streets, to food carts, or directed me into a restaurant, I glided over. Massive amounts of steam could only mean one thing – Dumplings!

If you are picturing Scooby Doo floating along after the delicious scent of warm fresh food, that was me in Korea.

In one of the many alleys outside the Namdaemun Market I found my first dumpling masters. Watching them fold, flip, and steam these yummy little gems was mesmerizing. I got so lost in the process, Jean-Claude had to ask me twice if I was going to buy any. The real question was how many could I carry? Thankfully they had bags to put our order in. We went under the next shady tree we found and dug into our prize. It tasted like pure gold!

After that I made it my mission to watch out for more billowing white clouds.

Check out the short video below to see both dumpling places.

Hoehyeon Station is the closest to Namdaemun Market

You can find a delicious dumpling place in Haeundae Market. I have starred where it is located on the map below.

This post is one in a series I am writing about my two-week vacation in Korea – Lea in Korea.

Giving Lilacs a little Sugar!

Lilacs are one of my favorite spring flowers, they are so fragrant.

This past weekend I foraged a bunch and made them into lilac sugar. This quick and easy recipe is a great base for a sugar scrub, a simple syrup, a delicious ingredient for baking, and nice in tea!

To see how easy it is to make check out my short video below;

Thank you for watching!

Lilacs & floral print

With the spring warmth all the lilacs are out and about. Which gave me a great excuse to wear floral print.

I paired the dress with some playful pink and gold bangles a friend brought me back from India. The necklace was given to me from a different friend who also went to India and brought it back. I might just have to go to India myself and buy all the jewelry!
